I began a journey in 2006 into the world of polymer clay and I'm still travelling. Narrative art – art which represents elements of a story is where I'm at.
I didn’t study art at university or anywhere else for
that matter. I studied mainly literature but I was drawn to the concept of art
narrative. I understood how I responded to the written word and I clashed with
my lecturers because of it. We were expected to respond to a piece of written
work and then back it up with what the ‘experts’ said about the
piece. It would seem that I responded
differently and at times didn’t find anyone to back
up what I thought. Would that make me wrong? I DON’T THINK SO! I really
believe that each individual brings their own experience to any piece of narrative,
whether it is art, literature or anything else. When I first started my practice
teaching rounds I loved presenting cartoons, photos and art to my students to
spark their imagination and to interpret what they were seeing and feeling by
writing stories, poems etc.
Art Narrative and Art as Therapy is where I am heading at the moment because
each piece I make generally has some sort of meaning in it for me otherwise
the creative urge diminishes. I started out making jewellery and even though
it shows technique, colour and beauty if it has no story then I don't enjoy
the process nearly as much. Although one necklace I made does suggest an intriguing
narrative, hence it is one piece I wear a lot and would not sell. It is the
piece pictured on this page. I hope you enjoy my site and remember it's not
the destination that is the focal part of life but the journey. Enjoy each step.
